HEADINGLEY NETWORK COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
March 2002
|
This news sheet (also available as a leaflet in Word document format ) is rather large – because there are the following new threats to our community:
This makes EIGHT letters of objection we are asking you to write if you share our view that Headingley is under threat from alcohol culture. We know this is a lot to ask, but PLEASE consider doing so – the more objections the more chance we have in court. (You can download an objection pack containing standard versions of these letters in Word document format). If you are particularly likely to be affected by the new pub on the Arndale, please come to a meeting on Monday (3rd March)
with the managing director of ‘Market Town Taverns’ who says that he wants to hear our objections – and explain why his outlet will be different! BE THERE
to tell him how you feel about it: 7.30 pm at Headingley Community Centre (upstairs)
.
If you wish to tell the local council and the police what you feel about the policing of our area, please attend the next meeting of the CIT (Community Involvement Team) which will be at 7pm
Tuesday 25th March at Becketts Park Primary School, Foxcroft Close, LS 6
. Most importantly – don’t forget to copy your objections to each of the applicants, or they will not be valid! Yours, Lesley Jeffries (Chair, Headingley Network)

1. The Box – 1 a.m. entertainments licence
This application is for an entertainments licence from 11 a.m. till 1 a.m. Mon to Sat, from 12 (noon) till 12.30 a.m. on Sundays and from 12 (noon) till 1 a.m. on Sundays before Bank Holidays. PLEASE write to object BY MARCH 11th to: Entertainment Licensing Department OR you may email: stephen.holder@leeds.gov.uk You should also copy your objection to the applicant’s solicitor: Poppleston Allen You may remain anonymous, but this will weaken your objection. Please include your name and address on your objection to strengthen our case. It is unlikely that the current entertainments licence (till 11 p.m.) would be revoked – so it’s best to object to the late night hours only. ![]() |
2. Trio Bar – 12.30 a.m. entertainments licence
This ‘restaurant’ applied for an extended entertainments licence for all three floors last year – it was turned down except for current opening hours in the basement bar. Now they’re back again – wanting to open for entertainment until 12.30 a.m. every day of the week – but in the bar only. This confirms what we’ve always known – that Trio is aiming at the same market as the other pubs and the bar is NOT just somewhere for people to wait for a table! Same procedure as above.

3. Arndale Centre – new bar - URGENT
The first bar/pub on the Arndale Centre will be the old Lloyds Bank, unless we object successfully to the application for a change of use by ‘Market Town Taverns’ plc. They want to change it to ‘A3’ use (food and drink) in order to open a bar/brasserie. Write to voice your objections preferably BY 27TH FEBRUARY to: Dylan Porter
Please make specific points about the loss of amenity for local residents, the traffic problems (taxis?) and the problems that are likely, given the problems that other premises in Headingley cause. SEE BELOW FOR ALCOHOL LICENCE FOR THIS SITE.

4. New on-licenses
There are now applications in for two entirely new licences – one for Trio’s two upper floors which until now have been restaurant only and the other for the Arndale Centre premises. Please write separate letters BY MARCH 7TH objecting to these applications and copy your objection to the applicant. The magistrates’ court is at: Leeds District Magistrates' Court The applicants are: Martin Wolstencroft for Trio,
and Market Town Taverns,

5. New Special Hours Certificates
Trio and the Box have applied for extended hours for their existing alcohol licences (the basement only in Trio at the moment). These licences will run for the same hours as the entertainments licences (see above). Objections should be sent BY MARCH 7TH to the magistrates court and copied to the applicants: Tracey Allport, Martin Wolstencroft,

6. Variation of Special Hours certificates – The Arc This is an extension of the extended hours that the Arc won in December – and opened the floodgate! They want this to run every day of the week until 12.30 a.m. instead of midnight Thurs to Sat (and Sun before Bank Holidays) . Write to magistrates and the applicant BY MARCH 7TH: Paul Young,
