NEWSLETTER

Spring 2002

At the first meeting since the AGM in January, we decided that future monthly meetings would have a quarterly pattern of two ‘themed’ meetings and a ‘business’ meeting for each three-month period. We will send out a newsletter before each block of meetings with the themes and dates/times of meetings for your information. The details of March, April and May can be found overleaf. We welcome all members of the Network to these meetings – our work depends on as many people getting involved as have a little time to spare.

In recent weeks we have seen the Box fence off the land outside it, so that wheelchair users and others have difficulty getting along the pavement. A little consideration would have meant that they negotiated with British Telecom and/or Highways, to make sure that the phone box was moved to a better spot. This fencing is too high to be erected without planning permission, and one of our members has pointed this out to the Planning Department. The Box’s owners have now applied for retrospective planning permission. See below for details of how to object. The Box has removed its unsightly banners too, because they are illegal. However, we have learned that the enforcement on these things only happens if people complain. You can complain about similar banners on the Arc and the new ‘cafe-bar’, Trio on North Lane – see below for details.

On the subject of the new cafe-bar, Trio, we note that this was going to be a restaurant with a small bar area for those waiting for tables. The advance publicity for the premises looks suspiciously like yet another drinking establishment like those already run by Arc Inspirations – the Arc and the Box. Watch this space.

CURRENT PLANNING APPLICATIONS:

  • Illuminated signs at the Box – write to Mr David A. Jones at the planning office (address below), quoting reference 26/69/02/SI. The Box is in a conservation area.
  • Application by Vodaphone for three further telecommunications masts and maintenance cabin on top of White Rose House (there’s one there already). Write to Mr David A. Jones at the planning office (address below), quoting reference 26/73/02/FU. A recent application for similar equipment at the cricket ground was turned down, so it is worth objecting! The health implications are still not certain - why should such a densely-populated area run the risk?
  • Fencing outside the Box – write to the planning office, quoting reference 26/101/02/FU. Your objections may be that its layout and existence imply that the Box will be looking to allow outside drinking in the summer months, currently banned under its licence conditions. This would need further planning permission, but experience of these processes tells us that the fencing will make the granting of such permission more likely. Add your own reasons.
  • Advertising banners on the Arc and Trio. Write to the Principal Enforcement Officer, Jim Wiggington, at the planning office, to object to these and any future banners that appear.
