NEWSLETTER

Summer 2002

A slightly late newsletter this quarter, so please be aware that the next meeting of HN is very soon – Monday 17th June in fact. We’d like as many of you there as possible, remember you don’t have to be on the committee to come to the meetings! Amongst other things, we’ll be meeting one of the representatives of the students who are trying to make a contribution to the area and we’ll be discussing the latest plans for the next ‘Celebrate Headingley’.

As usual, there are applications in for more adverse developments in Headingley. The complaints you have made about banners at the Arc and the Box have borne fruit in a way – they have now applied for planning permission to make their banners official! If you don’t want to see them become a permanent feature of Headingley, then write to Planning (see below) and object. It’s slightly late, so get your objections in soon – you can email David.A.Jones@leeds.gov.uk if you have email, but please make sure you include your address. The application references are 26/245/02/SN for the Arc and 26/246/02/SN for the Box.

There is a new application in for a 12m high mast, 3 antennae, cabinets and compounds opposite 223 Otley Road, Leeds 6. This is one of many applications by owners of buildings to make money by stuffing our area full of telecommunications equipment. There is, as yet, no certainty about the health implications of all of this development, and we think that closely populated areas like our own are not suitable places to allow uncontrolled experiments with public health. If you agree with us, then please object to application 26/309/02/DTM at the address below.

Perhaps not surprisingly, the establishment called Trio (44 North Lane) which was supposed to be a superior restaurant with a small bar in the basement for customers awaiting tables, has applied for an entertainments licence (singing, dancing and music) for all three floors and for seven days a week! We have written on your behalf to oppose this licence and will be appearing at the hearing on 18th June.

STOP PRESS..........

Did anyone out there witness the disturbance outside the Box on Friday 7th June after the England-Argentina match? We need witnesses. Please ring or email me (Lesley).

Some good news –

  • The planning permission for a balcony extension at the Arc and the fence around the pavement outside the Box have both been turned down. Your letters DO make things happen! Note that they might appeal against these decisions, and if so, we’ll make sure our voice is heard.

  • After much pressure from Headingley organisations and residents, and after a failed voluntary scheme, the council is seeking powers to completely ban TO LET signs in Headingley (and, we hope, parts of Weetwood). This is a small, but significant step forward in the huge fight against the effects of landlordism. They have asked for our opinion and we said ‘yes, please do it!’. We also asked for the boundary to include at least the Beckett Park estate where landlordism is rife.

  • Organisations around Headingley (including Headingley Network) are setting up a new community newsletter which will have the explicit aim of keeping residents of our area in touch with each other and events in the locality. As a member of HN you should receive the first copy in the next month or so – and you may be asked to distribute further copies to friends and neighbours. Watch this space!

If you have events or news for inclusion, please send to me (Lesley Jeffries) and I’ll pass on to the editorial team.
